Frangocastelo

Frangocastelo is name of the area and the homonymous beach taking after the name of the Venetian Castle that so unexpectedly stands proud, ripping the flat, wild landscape. It takes about an hour and a half drive Chania city centre yet it is definitely worth the trip. After an exciting journey through gorges and Valleys, passing the historical sites of Sfakia, one witnesses a wonderful view across the Libyan Sea and the famous castle of Frangocastelo.

White sandy-beaches

The surrounding white sandy-beaches are clean and untouched and the shallow water is ideal for children and non-swimmers. The area is a paradise for amateur fishermen. The rugged mountains and the calm of the Libyan Sea create a magical atmosphere.

Main beach of Frangokastelo

The main beach of Frangokastelo is well organized and is quite busy in peak summer months. One can find restaurants, cafes, shops and an ATM in the area. The nearest medical centre is located in Sfakia town. Heading west you will encounter the lengthy, sandy beach of Vatalos which has :L;lwith pebbles and rocks dispersed here and there that create the perfect basin for snorkeling. Orthi Ammos means standing sand and its name describes the nearby beach which features impressive sand hills.

The local legend Drosoulites

The local legend refers to the well-known in the area “Drosoulites” who are, allegedly, the ghosts of soldiers that fought in battles and appear at dawn, in the beginning of the summer with the first morning dew on the beach.
